Goodvibe & Da Girls Show
I’ve never really been interested in the kudos of being a DJ and I don’t take myself too seriously – I just love music, vinyl and mixing and I am genuinely interested in other people who have the same passion for music as me and what makes them tick..….
I suppose, looking back, I’ve always had a love for music I used to drive my mum nuts in my early teens blasting out old Motown, Soul, Funk…….. She could never understand it – she hardly ever played music and not at my type of volume! I moved on to hip-hop at some stage in the late 80’s and totally loved the scene. The cutting and scratching fascinated me- and still does. But going to a rave somewhere in London early in 1990 was the catalyst. I found myself in some disused building with dance music playing at a very loud volume with loads of other sweaty people – and LOVED IT!!!! Could not get enough of it! I loved it so much I managed to get a guy I knew to teach me how to mix. As it turned out- I was quite good at it.
I have various collections of house, funk, disco, soul, hip-hop, old rave, DnB and plenty of other random stuff. All on vinyl. I love to go digging for tunes – in some very dusty places. I get such a buzz when I find something amazing. My favourite tunes of any genre still give me goose bumps. I love to do sets that are really eclectic, that take you on a musical journey. But it has to be on vinyl for me. Although it has to be said, the new technology coming through now is amazing. It is really like playing vinyl. Crazy stuff!
I trained to be a sound engineer and worked for years all over the country with various bands. I’ve DJ’d at numerous venues around Bournemouth & Southampton, loads of different festivals and I did a few Notting Hill Carnivals back in the day. I also worked at the infamous Flying Records with the lovely Steve Oats (RIP) to support my vinyl habit. I’m now employed to teach media and audio production at an FE college and I’m involved in the bass2face network and of course my baby, The GoodVibe and Da Girls Show.
